Impact on Learning
Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) have a huge impact on the ways students learn. When a student is diagnosised with an SLD, it means that they have a brain that processes information differently from the norm. However, students are capable of learning anything that a neurotypical peer can learn. They may need to go about it in a different way. Given that each specific learning disability differs depending on the category, I've outlined the common educational challenges for students with specific learning disabilities in the academic areas of reading, writing, and mathematics.
Reading- When a student has a specific learning disability in reading, it affects students reading and language-processing skills. This will impact the ways students are able to decode, fluently read, and/or comprehend texts. Students may have a hard time reading letters without them flipping or moving across the page. They may just have an issue remembering the sounds associated with different letters and phonemes. Perhaps they are unable to remember a text that they just read, since they were so busy trying to read the words of the text.

Writing- When a student has a specific learning disability in writing, it impacts the student's ability to compose writing and think at the same time, brainstorm ideas, spell, write legibly, and/or spatially write on paper.
Mathematics- When a student has a specific learning disability in writing it impacts the student's ability to understand numbers and learn math concepts and facts. Students have trouble with memorizing basic facts, may switch operation signs, have trouble remembering multi-step directions, and/or show inconsistency with concepts.
