First Person Perspectives
It is often said to truly understand someone, you need to walk a mile in their shoes. However, when it comes to specific learning disabilities, it is hard to imagine what that would exactly entail. First person perspectives are critically important to understand people with SLD's educational, daily, and social struggles. One can not presume to know their challenges, without directly asking. Since every learning disability is different, each person's journey and struggles are unique. Once there is a better understanding of their challenges, it is easier to implement the correct strategies and modifications to allow that person to succeed. Additionally, by listening and validating people's journeys, we validate their experiences.
Simulations of learning disabilities are another way to become more understanding and empathetic of people with SLD. It is important to remember, however, that these are simulations and not exactly how people with SLD experience their disabilities. Their purpose is to give the participant an idea of what SLD academic challenges feel like. Understood has a very interactive and well done simulator, found here.
